CCR Walks: Introducing the "Honest" Courtesans - October 28, 2017

The Italian Renaissance is a time in which memorable female figures graced the cultural and artistic world. They may have made their mark on their own or as the wives or lovers of great men.  They ranged from artists to intellectuals to noble-ladies and even to high class courtesans ("cortigiane oneste"). This walk focuses on this last group, many of whom were able to weave themselves into the social fabric of their time in new and interesting ways, and in some cases acquire the elusive "respectability" they coveted. Join us as we explore the many facets of this difficult, brittle world, by looking at the neighborhoods they lived in, the churches they patronized, and in some cases the artwork which captured this long-lost world.

The Great Beauty Pre-Opening! - September 21, 2017

What better way to catch up after the summer than meeting for a drink at a spectacular new location with a breathtaking view? Join us on the roof of Palazzo Pamphilj at the new bar dubbed "La Grande Bellezza" (The Great Beauty, a reference to Paolo Sorrentino's award-winning 2013 film tribute to Rome). Part of the recently opened Eitch Borromini Hotel, the rooftop is accessible from the 6th floor and offers an incredible 360-degree panorama encompassing the iconic Piazza Navona and countless other sights. It truly has no rivals.

The hotel also has a large display of contemporary artwork in the Borromini Art Gallery on the 4th floor -- in addition to more wonderful views from the windows on that floor.

Members of the CCR executive will be on hand at this informal get-together in this refined setting, so you could take the opportunity to pay your membership dues or for our official club season opening party later this month. Or just come for a chat, a drink and some laughs! And catch an unforgettable sunset.

When: Thursday, September 21, 2017
Time: 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Where: 'La Grande Bellezza Rooftop' accessed through the 6th floor of Eitch Borromini Hotel, Via Santa Maria dell'Anima 30 (Piazza Navona)

RSVP to ATTN Diana. Booking is required as space is limited and the rooftop cannot be accessed without a reservation. First come, first reserved, but priority will be given to ongoing CCR members. You will be held financially responsible for your reservation if you fail to attend after reserving a spot.

CCR Walks: Ramblings on the Palatine - October 1, 2017

Following the summer break, we take up where we left off in the spring… and head to the heart of the ancient city, which has inspired countless artists, poets and writers as the cradle of a whole civilization: the Palatine Hill, where, we are told, “it all started” (and, in many ways, where it all ended). We will focus in part on the exciting discoveries which have been unearthed in recent years and which shed new light on today's ivy-covered ruins nestling among the pine-trees.

When: Sunday, October 1, 2017
Time: 10 a.m.
Meeting point: To Be Announced
Cost: €10 for members and €15 for non-members; FREE admission ticket (also valid for the Coliseum) because it will be the first Sunday of the month.
RSVP required by Thu. Sept. 28, ATTN Joe at You are financially responsible for your reservation.

CCR Book Club - September 19, 2017

Our first meeting of the Fall will take place on the evening of Tuesday, September 19th on the terrace of Ellen Beller’s home in the Via di Bravetta area.

author Amara Lakhous

The book for September's meeting is Clash of Civilizations over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio by Amara Lakhous. The book was originally written in Italian as Scontro di Civiltà per un Ascensore a Piazza Vittorio and is also available in French as Choc des civilisations pour un ascenseur Piazza Vittorio. The Algerian author, now an Italian resident, writes a satire of an immigrant's life in Italy, using the murder of a young man in the elevator of an apartment building at Piazza Vittorio as a vehicle for investigating the lives of the building’s residents. According to The New York Times, Lakhous' "real subject is the heave and crush of modern, polyglot Rome, and he renders the jabs of everyday speech with such precision that the novel feels exclaimed rather than written."

When: Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017
Time: 7 p.m.
Where: Via di Bravetta; exact address sent to confirmed participants by email.
Potluck Lunch: Please RSVP letting Luigi know what dish you will be preparing for 6 people.
